SD Chinese Historical Museum Presents “Vivian Yang: Shanghai Girl”

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is pleased to welcome, Vivian Yang, an award-winning and Publishers Weekly-profiled author, journalist, public speaker, and mentor, for a special presentation and book-signing.

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | SDCHM | Shanghai GirlTake a transcontinental literary journey with Vivian Yang, whose work bridges East and West through emotionally compelling and entertaining fictional work set in Shanghai, New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and parts of Europe.  She is the author of the novels, Memoirs of a EurasianShanghai GirlShan Hai Gaaru (Japanese edition), and the non-fiction work, Status, Society, and Sino-Singaporeans.  Her fiction explores the 20th century Chinese and Russian diasporas, a subject rarely seen in Western literature.  Memoirs of a Eurasian in particular deals with the life experiences of three generations of Russian-Chinese living in Shanghai’s French Concession before and under the communist regime.

As a literary arts mentor for The New York Foundation for the Arts’ (NYFA) Immigrant Artist Program, Vivian is committed to empowering immigrant communities of artists to tell their stories in the pursuit of enriching our collective human experience.  Vivian’s began publishing her work in her early twenties, when she taught English and Journalism at Shanghai International Studies University.  She later studied creative writing at Columbia University, where she was a Woolrich Writing Fund Scholar and a Writing Program Scholar, and at Bread Loaf Writers Conference, where she was an International Scholar.  She holds a master’s degree from the Hugh Downs School of Communication at Arizona State University and a B.A. in English from Shanghai International Studies University in her native Shanghai.

Published in America, China, Hong Kong, and Japan, Vivian has written for Business Weekly, China Daily, Far Eastern Economic Review, South China Morning Post, and The Wall Street Journal Asia.  She has published fiction in literary journals, anthologies, and webzines in the U.S. and Asia.  Her work has also appeared in the Opinion page ofHK Magazine, The National Law Journal, and The New York Times.

The presentation will take place at the Chuang Archive & Learning Center, located at 541 B Second Avenue, a reception with light refreshments will follow.  Admission is $4.00, members and children under 12 are free.
