A Straighter Smile Can Also Mean a Healthier Smile

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Dr. Tasto | Torrey Hills Dental LogoMany of us get our teeth cleaned at a dental office at least twice a year.  Many times, the areas that we struggle trying to brush and floss are the same areas the dental hygienist struggles with as well.  Sometimes the problem can be poor restorations, but the majority of the time it is due to crooked and crowded teeth.

Many patients come to my office for a FREE Cosmetic Consultation and are interested is having straight white teeth.  Very few patients are concerned with the hygienic aspect of their teeth.  We talk to the patients about the benefits of having straight teeth from a periodontal and gum health perspective.  Most are unsure of what all that means, or even go as far as to say that is not important to them, the just want straight white teeth.

It still amazes me after we complete an Invisalign case with a chief concern of crowding, how much less tartar and plaque the patients have at their hygiene appointments.  Many will comment to the hygienist how easy the cleaning was.  The hygienist will respond that because your teeth are now straight and functioning properly, they are cleaner.  Patients have less gingivitis and bone loss and ultimately keep their teeth longer.

Invisalign is a fantastic way to straighten your crowded and crooked teeth.  Invisalign trays are clear thin, hard trays that move your teeth 0.25mm per tray.  The patients will have a series of trays that they have to complete in order to create the perfect smile.  Typical cases are 9-12 months in length.  The patients wear the trays 20 hours per day and remove only to eat, drink and clean their teeth.  Due to the extended wear time, patients on average lose 8-12 lbs. during the active treatment phase.  That is one nice bonus that most of us would welcome gladly.

Take a close look in the mirror and try it identify your crowded and crooked teeth.  Ask yourself “are these the teeth with the most plaque and tartar on them?”  If the answer is YES, then you would benefit from Invisalign treatment in order to obtain a healthier smile, and of course,  a whiter and straighter smile as well.
