Three Easy Ways to Get More Sleep Tonight and Feel Better Tomorrow

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Amy Mewborn | Sweet DreamsOne thing I hear from clients over and over again is how tired they are.

It’s due to so many things.  First, we are just OVER extended!  Between work, kids’ activities, social obligations, and more – clients often say that they just feel like they can’t keep up.  When you haven’t had enough sleep – you are more likely to gain weight, have high blood pressure, and increased depression!

I don’t know how many moms spend all weekend on the soccer sidelines, or at all day sporting tournaments.  Then you add that to all the after school activities that the kids are rushing to – it’s no wonder that we’re all always exhausted.

But as we are coming off the summer and the kids are going back to school, you’re likely getting busier and busier.  Here’s a few tips to get better sleep tonight and have more energy tomorrow – WITHOUT having to have more hours in your day!

  1. Put the electronics in the other room.  Do you jump out of bed each morning and see who called or emailed?  Do you check it in the middle of the night?  Many of us do.  (And I must sadly admit that I do this at times as well).  I also have a horrible habit of not being able to get back to sleep, so I pick up my electronics and just start working for a few hours in the middle of the night.  The actual electronic waves from your technology is actually believed to change your circadian rhythm and keep you from getting a good (and full night’s sleep).
  1. Try not to drink more than one or two glasses of wine per night.  Have you ever had that crazy 3 am wake up?  You wake up with night sweats and wide awake?  It is literally your body detoxing the sugar from the evening’s alcohol.  You may be like me – one glass of wine actually helps me get to sleep, but I have found that it just does NOT help me stay asleep.  And if I have more than one glass?  Forget it.  I’m wide awake at 3 am – and then I’m headed to the room to get my electronics – and I’ve now committed TWO of the bad sleep sins!
  1. Create ambient noise.  If you are a light sleeper – consider a floor fan or something to create some white noise in the room.  My husband, Mike, is a snorer.  He tried to convince me for years that I should wear foam earplugs.  I finally agreed.  But in addition, we sleep with one of those loud floor fans.  It is loud enough to drown out most noises.  Because it has one loud, solid tone, your body gets used to that sound and actually kind of craves it in order to be able to really sleep well.  For me, it helps drown out some of the sounds of Mike’s snoring.  I have found that since sleeping with both earplugs and the fan, I can often make it through a night uninterrupted.

So, as the kids are back in school and you are busy – make sure you are getting enough sleep.  With more sleep, you will have more energy and be better able to handle what life throws your way!

When Amy began taking Pilates with her neighbor Wendy, in 2006, she fell in love with the method and benefits of the program and knew she wanted to help others achieve their fitness goals. It was not until Amy took her first barre class that she discovered her true passion for fitness. She loved the challenge and energy of each class. And more importantly, she was excited by the results as her body became more toned than through any other workout routine she had tried in the past. Amy would be one of the best testimonials for Fit in 60 Pilates and Barre. In less than a month’s time, attending 4-5 classes a week, Amy went from a size 10/12 to a size 6. She came home one day and told her husband, Mike that “if every girl knew this, every girl would do it.” Amy is passionate about getting to know her clients and provide modifications and corrections to challenge every client, while making classes as safe as possible. Amy lives in Carlsbad with her husband, Mike, and her dog Emma. She loves what she does, and is thrilled to present the Fit in 60 workout to Carlsbad and Carmel Valley and is eager to help women look and feel great!
