Del Mar, is one of my favorite communities in all of San Diego Country. It’s an upscale, residential beach town only a few miles north of San Diego. It’s where you can brush shoulders with the rich and famous, and the weather year round is probably the best Southern California has to offer.
What’s unique about Del Mar is that the population is only about 4,000 and has 2,600 homes in two square miles. The community has strictly enforced building guidelines that prevent high-rises or commercial billboards to obstruct the natural beauty of the ocean. Del Mar is all character. You can see it in the winding streets, the multimillion dollar homes scattered in canyons and hillsides, and the amazing ocean lookouts. Del Mar Plaza offers an array of shops, restaurants, and services as well as hosting weekly Live Music concerts on the Plaza’s ocean view deck. There are many unique local shops found along Stratford Square and Hwy 101 to enjoy. Many luxury hotels call this beach community home including the Grand Del Mar & the exquisite La’Auberge.
Another great landmark is the Powerhouse Park, Seagrove Park, and 15th Street beach which all provide excellent opportunities to enjoy the incredible Southern California lifestyle.
My favorite time of year in Del Mar is summer. The San Diego County Fair comes to town and the world famous Del Mar Thoroughbred Club starts the racing season. For horse lovers there is also the Del Mar Equestrian Center and San Diego Polo Club plays regularly into the fall.
Another great spot in Del Mar is Torrey Pines State Reserve, located just south of the town. 2,000 acres of forest and some natural beach land that is truly spectacular. You can hike along the steep bluffs and if you’re lucky see pods of gray whales during their annual migration and dolphins splashing around near shore.
Del Mar’s best known for its beaches; Time Magazine once called them the “Greatest Beaches in the World”. With stretches as long as two miles, it’s hard to find an equal in the county. Don’t worry about your 4 legged friends; they can enjoy the great beaches too, with a ½ mile at North Beach dedicated just for them.
I think Del Mar is a very special community; it’s a small village with a big heart. Whether you’re a tourist or a resident, you feel at home. Come stop by and enjoy the warm sand, sparkling blue waves and the welcoming community of Del Mar.
