San Diego Chinese Historical Museum Recipient of CollectionSpace Mini-Grant

2016 marks the twentieth anniversary of the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum, which has become the custodian of thousands of ethnographic artifacts and works of art related to China and Chinese in America. This small museum in downtown San Diego has always had the mission of sharing Chinese and Chinese American history, culture and art with diverse audiences; however, it has never had the resources to share this one-of-a-kind collection outside of its physical exhibition spaces.

With great excitement, the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum was awarded the first CollectionSpace implementation mini-grant. SDCHM plans to use CollectionSpace to begin the process of archiving and digitizing the Museum’s collections in order to eventually make this material available to the general public online.

Together with the Balboa Park Online Collaborative, SDCHM will be embarking on an extensive project to organize its collections into an effective system of archival management. The Museum will be working closely with the Balboa Park Online Collaborative on this endeavor.

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum deeply appreciates the support and guidance of CollectionSpace and Balboa Park Online Collaborative and hopes to involve the greater San Diego and Asian art community in part of this new archival and digitization process.
