Tips for Preschool Readers

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Kristin Rude | Children ReadingHelp your preschooler learn about books and book handling.  The next time you share a story with your preschooler, try this!

  • Examine the front cover, back cover, title page, and the title of the story.
  • Track text while you read.  Point at each word while you read it.
  • Show how you read each page, following text from the top to the bottom of the page and left to right across the page.  Show how you follow each line of text, making a return sweep down and left to pick up the next line to read.
  • Discuss what a reader does when he or she sees different punctuation marks.
  • Point to the page where the story begins and draw attention to the page where the story ends.
These tips will help your preschooler with print concepts.
