Top 10 Places You Wouldn’t Expect To Find Gluten

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Amy Mewborn | Table with Loaded with FoodWe all know that as a grain, we would expect that gluten is in our pizza and pasta.  But if you are genuinely trying to go gluten free for either your health or weight loss, here are a few very surprising places that gluten may be hiding!

  1. Baked Beans
  2. Blue Cheese
  3. Ketchup and Mustard
  4. Ice cream
  5. Spice Blends and Gravy powders
  6. Some alcoholic drinks (such as beer and vodka)
  7. Sauces – Soy, Pasta, or Cheese
  8. Licorice
  9. Salad Dressings
  10. Lunch Meat

Are you as surprised as I was???  I couldn’t believe it!

Gluten is used by food producers (and I’m going to say food factories) to thicken food, to make it more shelf stable (last longer), and to improve the texture of many foods.  You may think that if you took bread, pizza, and pasta out of your diet that you are now gluten free.  But I would ask you – are you eating any of these foods listed above?  Are those foods that you are eating gluten free?  Do you think you’re doing it “right” but are unconsciously sabotaging your success?

If you are trying to eat gluten free, you need to really look at the labels.  You need to really educate yourself on what that means.

And you are eating gluten free for weight loss, you need to remember that gluten free doesn’t automatically mean healthy!  If you have replaced your food with gluten free muffins and cakes, you are likely:

  1. Eating too many calories to lose weight
  2. Eating nutritionally void processed foods that are leaving you constantly hungry for more!

To really be successful on any diet change, you need to look at WHAT you are eating.  Is it providing you with vitamins, minerals, and other items needed to maintain a healthy body with energy?

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Amy MewbornOriginally from the Midwest, Amy moved to San Diego in 2001. A graduate of Valparaiso University, Amy had been a Financial Advisor since 1997. When Amy began taking Pilates with her neighbor Wendy, in 2006, she fell in love with the method and benefits of the program and knew she wanted to help others achieve their fitness goals. It was not until Amy took her first barre class that she discovered her true passion for fitness. She loved the challenge and energy of each class. And more importantly, she was excited by the results as her body became more toned than through any other workout routine she had tried in the past. Amy would be one of the best testimonials for Fit in 60 Pilates and Barre. In less than a month’s time, attending 4-5 classes a week, Amy went from a size 10/12 to a size 6. She came home one day and told her husband, Mike that “if every girl knew this, every girl would do it.” Amy is passionate about getting to know her clients and provide modifications and corrections to challenge every client, while making classes as safe as possible. Amy lives in Carlsbad with her husband, Mike, and her dog Emma. She loves what she does, and is thrilled to present the Fit in 60 workout to Carlsbad and Carmel Valley and is eager to help women look and feel great!
